Lesson 2 Acts 1:12-26

Recap lesson 1 review focus of Acts using Acts 1:8

Act 1:8 NASB  but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."  (We will see the coming of the Holy Spirit in Chapter 2 then through the rest of Acts the spread of the gospel and establishment of the Lord’s church across the Roman Empire.)
Act 8:1 NASB  Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death. And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Act 8:4 NASB  Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.  (The enemies of the church helped to spread it by attacking it.)
The plan for evangelism – as you go about preach the word.
Act 11:19-21 NASB  So then those who were scattered because of the persecution that occurred in connection with Stephen made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone.  (20)  But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus.  (21)  And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord.  (Now non-Jews were being saved – praise the Lord!)
Act 13:1-5 NASB  Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.  (2)  While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."  (3)  Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.  (4)  So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus.  (5)  When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper.
Act 28:13-14 NASB  From there we sailed around and arrived at Rhegium, and a day later a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli.  (14)  There we found some brethren, and were invited to stay with them for seven days; and thus we came to Rome. (about 75 miles form Rome)
Act 28:22-24 NASB  "But we desire to hear from you what your views are; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere."  (23)  When they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.  (24)  Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe.
Act 24:14 NASB  "But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets;
(Amen and Amen)

Act 1:4 NASB  Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me;

The key focus is for the apostles to stay in Jerusalem.  They had a promise to receive and prophecy to fulfill!  In Acts 2 Peter declares that the receiving of the Holy Spirit was a fulfillment of a prophecy spoken through Joel.

Beginning in verse 12 we find the apostles returning to Jerusalem and apparently waiting for the next 10 days

Act 1:12 NASB  Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.

‘a Sabbath day's journey away’ is about three fourths of a mile by interpretation of the Jewish Rabbi’s.

Luk 24:50-53 NASB  And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.  (51)  While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.  (52)  And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,  (53)  and were continually in the temple praising God.

After seeing the ascension of Jesus into heaven the disciples worshiped Him.  They now knew and understood that Jesus was both God and man and as such they worshipped Him.

Now their parting from Jesus brought the attitude of worship and of great joy.  The same attitudes we should have today when we think about Jesus.  We know Jesus died for our sins and we know He has gone to prepare a place for us and we know He is coming back visibly on the clouds the same way that He left.  Well, let’s praise God and be glad every day!

Also we find they apparently spent a lot of time in the temple blessing God or being thankful to God.  At this point, with their Jewish background, they probably were still drawn to the temple as the place of God, plus there were plenty of religious Jews there that they could teach.

Act 1:13 NASB  When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.

Back in Jerusalem they went to ‘the upper room’.  In the Greek the ‘the’ is there indicating a specific upper room.  Possibly the upper room of the last supper.  Here are the 11 sticking together and waiting as Jesus told them to.

Act 1:14 NASB  These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Luk 8:2-3 NASB  and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,  (3)  and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.
Mar 15:40-41 NASB  There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome.  (41)  When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Rom 6:13 NASB  and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Many women presented themselves as servants of God by ministering to Jesus as He went about preaching and teaching.  They helped the cause of Christ by serving and giving out of their own private means.

They (11 apostles, various unnamed women, Mary mother of Jesus, and Jesus’ brothers and others such as Matthias and Joseph/Barsabbas/Justus v23 and per v15 it was about 120 persons) were all together and all ‘with one mind’, this was a wonderful time of peace in the group just coming off the high of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension and they devoted themselves to prayer.  They had:

1.   Seen Jesus go into heaven
  1. 2. Knew Jesus was coming back
  2. 3. Knew Jesus would come back the same way He left
  3. 4. They had received a message by heavenly messengers
  4. 5. They were told to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come on them with power
  5. 6. They may still have had kingdom expectations
  6. 7. They had their future as witnesses for Jesus
  7. 8. They had the Jews and Romans to watch out for

They had plenty to pray about!

Jesus’ half brothers had apparently had a change of heart and were now part of the group with the disciples of Jesus.

Act 1:15 NASB  At this time Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together), and said,

This was a large upper room to hold about 120!

We see Peter taking a leadership position, maybe as a result of this discussion Jesus had with him before He left:

Joh 21:14-17 NASB  This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.  (15)  So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He *said to him, "Tend My lambs."  (16)  He *said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He *said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He *said to him, "Shepherd My sheep."  (17)  He *said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus *said to him, "Tend My sheep.

Act 1:16 NASB  "Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

The Scripture is true and cannot be broken, it must be fulfilled.

David was inspired by the Holy Spirit and his prophecy had multiple fulfillments.

Act 1:17 NASB  "For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry."

Judas was fully one of the disciples and of his freewill departed from being a disciple to being a traitor.

Act 1:18 NASB  (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.

Judas hanged himself out of remorse and apparently his body eventually fell to the ground and ruptured.

Act 1:19 NASB  And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

The field was purchased with blood money, Judas’s innards were deposited on the ground, and Judas had his share of the blood of Jesus on his hands as the betrayer.  So there are many reasons to call this the ‘Field of Blood’.

Act 1:20 NASB  "For it is written in the book of Psalms, 'LET HIS HOMESTEAD BE MADE DESOLATE, AND LET NO ONE DWELL IN IT'; and, 'LET ANOTHER MAN TAKE HIS OFFICE.'

Psalm 69:25 and Psalm 109:8 are quoted here in regards to the action they were about to engage in, the replacement of Judas to return to a full number of 12.

Psa 69:25 NASB  May their camp be desolate; May none dwell in their tents.

Psa 109:8 NASB  Let his days be few; Let another take his office.

Act 1:21 NASB  "Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us--

Act 1:22 NASB  beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us--one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection."

Peter either received these qualifications from Jesus while He was with them or from the Holy Spirit, we are not told the source except from verses 24 and 25 - it obviously came from God.

Act 1:23 NASB  So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias.

Based on these qualifications they narrowed the choice down to two; Justus and Matthias.

Act 1:24 NASB  And they prayed and said, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen

They are asking God to show whom He has chosen.  God gave the qualifications and instructed them to use them to find who was to be a replacement.

Act 1:25 NASB  to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place."

In their prayer they make it clear that the choice belonged to Judas to turn aside and go to his own place.

Just like it is up to each one of us to make our own choice.  God does not want any to perish but all to repent but the choice to repent is ours and ours alone.

Act 1:26 NASB  And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

Now they were back to full strength, they were whole, they were complete, they were 12 waiting.

Looking forward to Acts chapter 2

For your daily Bible reading this week please read acts chapter 1 and especially chapter 2

Act 1:5 NASB  for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

This would be a baptism, which means immersion, like none they had ever known.  An immersion with the Holy Spirit, which would enable them to proclaim the gospel truthfully with power.

It was to be in the near future, ‘not many days from now’.

The disciples realized it was important for them to be organized the way Jesus set them up.  Jesus chose 12 apostles out of all who followed Him.  When one left and was lost they realized they needed to get things back to normal, back to the way Jesus had set them up.

So they used the Scripture and God’s qualifications to get it right.

The same principles are true in Jesus’ church today – use the Scripture and choose God’s way in everything.

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus declared ‘I will build My church’.  Jesus sets the entrance requirements and through the Holy Spirit inspiring the apostles and prophets He set up the structure and organization.

To be members of the church that Jesus built we must use the Scripture to discern the divine structure of the church.  We must speak where the Bible speaks, be silent where the Bible is silent, call Bible things by Bible names, and do Bible things in Bible ways.  After all it is not our church!

In Acts 2 when Peter opened the doors to the church on the first Pentecost after Jesus death, burial, and resurrection he:

Preached Jesus to the people

When they believed they asked ‘what shall we do?’

Peter told them to repent

Peter told them to be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins

Peter told them to be baptized ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’ this means they would have to acknowledge and confess Him and they were being baptized by Jesus’ authority and command.

About three thousand received Peter’s word, were baptized, and were counted among the saved.

From that time we find they devoted themselves to learning God’s Word, worship activities, and fellowship.

If you have not obeyed the entrance requirements into the kingdom like they did then you do not have what they got that day – salvation!

If you have, like Judas, turned your back on Jesus then you need to repent and pray to be restored to full fellowship with Him.

Acts 2:1-22 Lesson 3

Lesson 3 Acts 2:1-22

Introduction Acts 1:8

Act 1:8 NASB  but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."  (We will see the coming of the Holy Spirit in Chapter 2:1-22 which would enable them to spread of the gospel and establish the Lord’s church across the Roman Empire.)
Act 2:1 NASB  When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
“had come” – literally means ‘was being fulfilled’ from the Greek.  Which gives the sense of this passage that prophecy was being fulfilled on this wondrous day.
Pentecost - Lev 23:15-18 NASB  'You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths.  (16)  'You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the LORD.  (17)  'You shall bring in from your dwelling places two loaves of bread for a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah; they shall be of a fine flour, baked with leaven as first fruits to the LORD.  (18)  'Along with the bread you shall present seven one year old male lambs without defect, and a bull of the herd and two rams; they are to be a burnt offering to the LORD, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.
The Sabbath was the 7th day of the week = Saturday so seven Sabbaths = 49 days then plus 1 puts this on the first day of the week or Sunday.  Which is the pattern we see henceforth in the New Testament as to when the Christians would meet  and so we do today.
Stay in the City until you are clothed with power from on high -
Luk 24:44-53 NASB  Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled."  (45)  Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,  (46)  and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,  (47)  and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.  (48)  "You are witnesses of these things.  (49)  "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."  (50)  And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.  (51)  While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.  (52)  And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,  (53)  and were continually in the temple praising God.

Act 2:2  And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Mat 3:7-12 NASB  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  (8)  "Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;  (9)  and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.  (10)  "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  (11)  "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  (12)  "His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Act 2:3  And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
OT eample:
Exo 3:2 NASB  The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
NT example of giving of the Spirit
Mat 3:16-17 NASB  After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,  (17)  and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
Another giving of the Spirit to confirm God’s choice
Act 10:44-48 NASB  While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.  (45)  All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.  (46)  For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,  (47)  "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?"  (48)  And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

Act 2:4  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
 ‘hagios pneuma’ – holy wind/breath
‘tongues’ = languages as evidenced in v6.
Act 2:5  Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
Jews from all over were in Jerusalem and would be instrumental in spreading the gospel and the story of this miracle they had witnessed to every nation under heaven when they traveled back to their homelands.

Act 2:6  And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
‘this sound’ = ‘from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind’ attracted a crowd to hear the first gospel sermon by Peter
Act 2:7  They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

Act 2:8  "And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
It is clear they were speaking in other languages which would assist them in spreading the gospel or good news of Jesus.  God was providing them the ability to carry out His wishes.
A representation of ‘every nation under heaven’.
Act 2:9  "Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,  (10)  Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,  (11)  Cretans and Arabs--we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."
Both Jews and converts to Judaism = gentiles
Act 2:12  And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
This was clearly an unusual occurance.
Act 2:13  But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine."
Many will mock what they do not understand or what they do not want to acknowledge, they mocked them as being drunk on grape juice – new or sweet wine is unfermented grape juice, a study of ancient wine will show that the ancients had the knowledge to keep grape juice unfermented. The Bible word for wine denotes both fermented and unfermented grapes – distinguished by the context.

 Act 2:14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.  (15)  "For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
Peter did not play in to their mocking but answered their allegations in a straightforward factual manner it was only 9AM on a feast day when they would be fasting in the early morning.
Act 2:16  but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
Peter informs them that instead it was the fulfillment of a prophecy spoke through the prophet Joel 2:28-32.

(17)  'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
We are in the period of human time known as the last days, when these days are over there will be no more time or days.
‘all mankind’ = all flesh = jews and gentiles = male and female
(18)  EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.
Gal 3:28-29 NASB  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  (29)  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.

(19)  'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.  (20)  'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
Apocalyptic OT language as in Matthew 24.

Key verse for the rest of the chapter
(21)  'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'
From this point until v41 and v47 where it shows they were saved and added to the church we must see what they did to call on the name of the Lord.  Jesus himself taught that is was more the verbal but obedience
Mat 7:21 NASB  "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

Act 2:22  "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
Heb 5:8-9 NASB  Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.  (9)  And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

Starting here in verse 22 Peter begins proclaiming Jesus – the source of eternal salvation and in whom we must believe as Jesus himself taught-
Joh 6:26-29 NASB  Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  (27)  "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal."  (28)  Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"  (29)  Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

Believing in Jesus is a work which we are to do as required by God and taught by Jesus.  We have to have a change of mind from non-believer to believer.  That is our job/our work.

They showed that they believed in verse 37 when they were pierced to the heart
Act 2:37 NASB  Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"
When they asked ‘what shall we do’ Peter continued in v38 and answered their question
Act 2:38 NASB  Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

As Jesus said:
Luk 5:32 NASB  "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
The nature of repentance:
Luk 3:8-14 NASB  "Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.  (9)  "Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."  (10)  And the crowds were questioning him, saying, "Then what shall we do?"  (11)  And he would answer and say to them, "The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise."  (12)  And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?"  (13)  And he said to them, "Collect no more than what you have been ordered to."  (14)  Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages."
Repentence = Change the way you think and do

Peter went on to combine Baptism with repentence again agreeing with Jesus:
Mar 16:16 NASB  "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Here belief and baptism combined together by Jesus as being necessary for salvation.

Our baptism is to be ‘in the name of Jesus Christ’ which would require us to acknowledge him  and would imply confessing him as Jesus taught:
Matthew 10:32-33 NASB95 32"Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33"But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.

Act 2:40-42 NASB  And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!"  (41)  So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.  (42)  They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
In v40 Peter kept encouraging them to ‘be saved’ and v41 tells us that ‘those who had received his word were baptized’ and were added and v47 shows us they were added to ‘their number’ – the church.
V 42 shows us they kept learning and devoted themselves to worship activities.  As Jesus taught that we must continue to learn and obey:
Matthew 28:18-20 NASB95  18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus declared ‘I will build My church’.  Jesus sets the entrance requirements and through the Holy Spirit inspiring the apostles and prophets He set up the structure and organization.

To be members of the church that Jesus built we must use the Scripture to discern the divine entrance requirements of the church.  We must speak where the Bible speaks, be silent where the Bible is silent, call Bible things by Bible names, and do Bible things in Bible ways.  After all it is not our church!
